A nationally ranked tennis player at both the junior and college level, Dale Short was OVC Player of the Year as an MT senior. An All-OVC performer in 1979 and 1980, Short was named to the league's all-time tennis team in 1988 in celebration of the OVC's 40th anniversary.
Short stepped into the MT head tennis coach's job in 1988. Under his tutelage, the men's teams have captured multiple OVC and SBC championships and tournaments and taken teams to NCAA regionals. Head coach of the women's program from 1991-94, he guided those players to three straight OVC titles and a combined mark of 66-38.
